Historically, this is considered to be the first ever Detroit Techno record, released in 1981 a few weeks before Cybotron' s 'alleys of the mind. Musically, it' s a strange but cool mash-up between Kraftwerk, Italo and Robotic New-Wave, with a quite minimal and raw production. Slick, excellent record but totally hard to find.The complete story about this song in Dan Sicko' s landmark book "Techno Rebels", one of the best book about the history of Detroit Techno.

The catalog number of this release is a nod to the Porsche 928.

The vocal track "Sharevari" sings the praises of that car, as well as L' Uomo Vogue, GQ, car cassettes, cigarettes, bread, cheese, fine white wine, and just about everything else Northwest Detroit party boys aspired to in 1981 (just a nice curiosity, cause our post talking about Instrumental version).

This without question was War's statement to the establishment (MCA records) that; "hey! we can do that dance thing too!".

Friday night in Parma (for some odd unknown reason) in a not particularly nice club, i was lucky enough to be present at experience Maurice Fulton' s dj set, and the fact that i drunk too much was my only dissapointment. I would have simply wished that i had drunk slightly less to enjoy MF's music even more, it was all (stunning) wonderful, and thank to God one of my favourite songs by Loleatta Holloway, queen of Soul and Disco music, came to my mind. The Deodato 1980 album "Nightcruiser" burns!

It' s very "Ladies Night" period Kool & The Gang (makes perfect sense since Deodato is the producer); both of these records feature no vocals and Deodato is as fabulous an arranger as ever.

This Vinyl show the tendence of Eumir Deodato in a funky jazz style, with special instrumental electronic effects, but keeping his own style of making good music, which defines him in his triunfant career.

This 12" should not be missing in a good contemporary jazz collection. Deodato keeps using violins and traditional instruments in order to keep his own style.

Two weeks ago I had the occasion to play some discs with Kim Ann Foxman (from Hercules & Love Affair) at Magazini Generali, in Milan.
I' m trying to follow her since 2 years ago when she told me, by mail, about her inborn passion for Acid House, Deep & Chicago House (apart her love for jewels and the design of those periods that she 's trying to recreate, since few years ago, with her own collection).

First of all, thanks to our friends Sidney Geubelle (http://bgdc12.blogspot.com).

She reminded me to have about 50mb of these sounds.

"Night Flight" gives us a very smooth edited version of Stevie Wonder' s fantastic "Love Light In Flight".

What a vibe; a long and very interesting build up ending in the warm vocals.

Ok only Stevie Wonder is God for us.

The "free fall" of hypnotic synth are damn gorgeous and at the fourth minute, when THE voice suddenly explodes into a funky and groovy rhythm, well, it' s impossible to stay still and not move even a single muscle in our body.

Thank you God for having created in his image and likeness!

Look at this video by Kenny Loggins

It looks like a Raelian convention. Kenny has always been incredibly cheesy, that's the only problem with him and the main reason why he is so much underrated (take a Look at the cover down here if you don't believe me: same raelian style).

By the way in the 70's he wrote stunning songs and was a very good performer, then money made their course and he preferred to write multimillion selling soundtrack for cheesy (again) movies like footloose. Anyway, he wrote songs so good that the one in the video was sampled by NAS. But my fave is this one:

It features a sample from one of the most incredible song Ahmad Jamal recorded, and I can tell you: I hold the complete Jamal discography and I saw him live a couple of times (they could have been three, but one day that I was in NY I had to choose between Jamal and Jimmy Smith: I chose Jimmy because I thought he would have probably pass out sooner: I was right. RIP Jimmy). Anyway: this is one of my favorite jam ever, the bassline, the impelling fate that you can feel all through the song etc etc. Let me use the words of Baby Grandpa "Swahililand' move me to tears at times (...) An almost ten minute long composition with such nice chords; you simply can't keep your eyes dry."

The Conversation track is killer, but the one on here is 'Why'd You Fall?' The morphing of the vocal and synth line is unbelievable, superb, futuristic and downright dope house music.Still drops people to their knees on the right dancefloor, and is one of many reasons why Lil Louis is so rated among his contemporaries and fans alike. The guy is a dancefloor genius. Essential release that should be owned by any DJ who knows what a club weapon this record is.

A 'must-have' in any DJ case and a 'must-be' on every 'all time Disco list', "Let No Man Put Asunder" was much more than a femminist anthem or underground Disco hit, as it represented a standard for a whole generation.

This Track is pretty ubiquitous. It' s Perhaps the most sampled track in Dance music actually. It was produced in 1977 and pressed to a rare 12". In 1983 it was re-released as a 12" with both Shep Pettibone and Frankie Knuckles Remixes. This fine sounding rip is from the rare 12" bootleg EP pictures which features the Shep Pettibone mix.

Probably had a too short career, but for sure, many of us remember Minnie Riperton, like many black women in those years, but with a characteristic: a more sweet, quiet, romantic and soul voice.

Third and fourth post for the "Love Italia" sessions, with Pino D'Angiò and Loredana Bertè: in their own way two folklore characters of the italian music.

Author and Composer, Pino D' Angiò revealed himself to the masses with his famous disco hit "Ma Quale Idea" in 1980.

The song has been sampled by many artist in the 80's and the 90's, such as the French duo "No Se" and the Australian dance duo "Madison Avenue".

Fonda Rae, the Deputy Of Love sang this track for Don Armando's Second Avenue Rhumba Band in 1979.

She later sang on hits by Kid Creole and the Coconuts and Patrick Adams and Greg Carmichael's group Wish before putting out releases under her own name. This is a soulful, funky jam that has a tongue and cheek vocal delivery and a classic disco stomp.

I also found on the web (about one year ago) this housy remix for you to enjoy as well.

Same artist as the first "love Italia" post, Lucio Battisti is generally considered a popular, pop artist widely appreciated by Italian masses and beloved by the Italian TV of the sixties / seventies.
Actually those who know well Battisti know how behind this mask there is a tormented personality constantly researching inspiration in Progressive, Classical, Disco music, Electronic and Avant-Garde. Trying to push further the boundaries of italian music, in some cases he wrote masterpieces while sometimes he wrote craps.

While in the first Post "Il veliero" was more of a Psychedelic/Funk, the track that we consider here is an Italo/Prog pastiche.

Hope you like it. Italians still don't understand it.

After Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy was arguably the most influential Chicago house DJ. When Knuckles left The Warehouse to open the Power Plant in 1983, Robert Williams lured Ron Hardy with the promise of his own club, The Muzic Box.

Hardy’s style was imaginative, with radical tape edits, fast tempos, and heavy EQing on his GLI mixer.

What's amazing about this track is that the mix of instruments and vocals is very extensive and tight, on par with the best bands, and that this classy instrumental mix could be created by such a young man, almost a boy at the time. If you listen to today's Cerrone's compositions, there's far less instrumental content in them. Almost makes you suspect that it was someone else, much more mature, who created instrumental parties for this composition.

Nicky Siano was dancing in Manhattan clubs at fifteen and by the age of 17 was resident and co-owner of the hottest club in New York: The Gallery. He mentored Frankie Knuckles and Larry Levan, worked in the studio with Arthur Russell and was set to become another high-profile drug casualty until he got his life back on track with campaigning work for people with AIDS. He came out of retirement in the late 1990s and these days DJs all over the world.

Tempest Trio released only one album, but it yielded the famous single, "Love Machine."

Produced by Mike Theodore and Dennis Coffey, it follows their tried and true Disco formula that many have heard on material such as "Devil's Gun (CJ & Co), "The Bull" and "High On Mad Mountain."

"Love Machine" is the best cut, but "Do You Like (The Way That it Feels?)" is good enough to raise an eyebrow while shaking your booty.

Soul diva Patti LaBelle enjoyed one of the longest-lived careers in contemporary music, notching hits in a variety of sounds ranging from girl group pop to space-age funk to lush ballads. Born Patricia Holt in Philadelphia on May 24, 1944, she grew up singing in a local Baptist choir, and in 1960 teamed with friend Cindy Birdsong to form a group called the Ordettes. A year later, following the additions of vocalists Nona Hendryx and Sara Dash (called LaBelle: awesome mix in the 90s dudes!), the group was rechristened the Blue Belles; with producer Bobby Martin at helm, they scored a Top 20 pop and R&B hit in the 60s.

Kat Mandu is Jimmy "Bullet" Ray, born and raised in Guyana S.A.

Jimmy began singing his heart out in his church choir and discovered the path he would follow at an early age. As a lead singer and guitarist he became so well recognized that he was invited to appear with renowned artists including: Sam & Dave, Ben E. King, and Carla Thomas. With them he performed for audiences in various European, American and Caribbean countries.

Every now and then a sng comes along that helps define an era, in 1979 that song was "The Break". A rousing high energy instrumental that to this day packs dance floors. When that song emerged it was believed to be by a group, speculation was that it was a "studio" group fronted by Joe LaGreca and Denis LePage. Of course LePage and LaGreca were part of the process but they were by no means the driving force. Adding to the mystery was the album cover which featured a painting of a tiger. It wasn' t until the second album that dancers could put a face to the name Kat Mandu.

Rooted in the New York no wave scene, the mostly female Bush Tetras had a minimalistic sound that set funky African and Caribbean rhythms against the amateurish guitar clank'n'sputter typical of the city's early-'80s post-punk. The group consisted of vocalist Cynthia Sley, guitarist Pat Place, bassist Laura Kennedy, and drummer Dee Pop; Place had worked with James Chance/White in both the Contortions and the bizarre no wave funk outfit the Blacks.

If you haven't got a soul, take it from the Bush Tetras. They know this sort of stuff.

Desmond Child and Rouge's "Our Love Is Insane" was a very good song that John Luongo extended for this 12" on Capitol.
The entire LP from which it waa taken from has a very pop / rock-like edge to it.

Desmond Child later went on to produce and write for some of the big names in music like Bon Jovi!

'Falls' is as strange as it is beautiful with sketchy pianos and Gregorian vocals. The Hercules and Love Affair remix is old school house with clean drums and a wicked acid line that reminds me of some of raves humbler beginnings. This almost harkens back to the classic electronic stylings of Enigma only not as breathy and lame.

"Jump to it" is the top, a sample of Funk & Soul together with upcoming artists like Luther Vandross (also produced this album), Fonzi Thornton (The Leader '83), Marcus Miller, The Brothers Johnson (Louis Johnson plays bass on "Just my Daydream"), Levi Stubbs (The Four Tops, duet on "I Wanna make it up to you") and George Duke (Shine on '82). A unique combination, as these artists including Aretha know how to deal with it. From delicious uptempo's to silky soul ballads, the whole album is wonderful. Nevertheless, all these productions from the '80's set the pace. Meant what this decade was all about, you can find it also back in these songs. Eventhough this album is nearly 20 years old, the music can last forever.

Pretty pearl by Matt Hughes, inspired obviously on Aretha' s track, popped out by the deep sea funk oyster Outcross Records. "Can't Talk Now" is ultra ultra groovy, a good indicator of the rest of Hughes' latest release, The Funk Theory EP. Check out his label buddies, they're all quite excellent.

DSK it' s simply the abbreviation of the trio that has begun the project in 1988: Lawrence Davis, Joseph Louis Stone and Paul Klein.

Performers Nefertiti, Joi and Patrix were the face of the group, created by the production team of Davis-Stone-Klein.

This track that i give you, was used for the closing credits on a film called "Necessary Roughness" 1991 with Scott Bakula ( from Quantum Leap TV series ). It' s a classic House track that Steve Silk Hurley is amused to mixed with four different versions.

Four years ago, Breezin' established guitarist-singer George Benson as the king of this hip, high-gloss mood genre, in which a virtuoso could coolly strut his stuff without ever risking spontaneity.
